China's goals in renewable energy sector

English Hrvatski

Three gorges dam by NASA China's rapid economic growth transformed this country into industrial giant, but there are also some not pleasant side effects that also resulted from China's economic boom, mainly heavy reliance on ever-increasing expensive foreign oil and huge environmental damage done by fossil fuels. These reasons as well as periodic power shortages have really forced China's government to turn to renewable energy sector in upcoming years as they have decided that renewable energy must be much larger part of China's economy if China wants to achieve energy security needed to maintain its current economic growth rate.

In the near-term China is set to develop 120,000 MW's of renewable energy by the year 2020 and if this plan turns out to be success this would account for 12% of China's total installed energy producing capacity. China's growth target for renewable energy production will require an investment of approximately 800 billion Yuan (about US$100 billion) by 2020 which is large investment but would have positive effects on cutting down import of expensive foreign fuels and reduce amount of ecologically unacceptable coal that is still by far the most dominant fuel used in China.

China has set a renewable energy target of 10% of electric power capacity by 2010 (expected capacity of 60 GW), 5% of primary energy by 2010 and 10% of primary energy by 2020. In the long term China has set an objective of having 30% or more of its total energy requirements satisfied by renewable energy sector by 2050. China's current renewable energy trend that should mean dominant future orientation on renewable energy sources is well coordinated process that involves not only efforts of China's government but also of Chinese ever-growing renewable energy companies, different industry associations, both central and local government agencies and many other non-governmental organizations.

This plan isn't made to only include currently dominant large hydropower projects as China's only renewable energy source that can be used on large scale, but also small and medium hydropower projects that don't have such negative impact on environment, and also wind power, solar energy and biomass. This China's plan includes also environmental analyses and this is something that China used to ignore in its previous renewable energy projects (Three Gorges Dam). There's also supporting law (Chinese Renewable Energy Law) included in this new plan and this all indicates rising demand for renewable energy in China and China's seriously plans to significantly expand its renewable energy sector.

This new renewable energy sector plan and strategy is issued in report «Analyzing Renewable Energy in China», and this report presents first complete analysis of different renewable energy sectors in China by analyzing both joined and potential of each of these sectors separately in correlation to overall energy industry in China. There are also major industry players like China Sun Biochem, China Biodiesel International, Camco International, Renesola, etc., all profiled in "Analyzing Renewable Energy in China".
